Finding hope in North Yorkshire: Olena’s journey to reunite with her family
In Olena’s Own Words
"My name is Olena, and I am from Dnipro. My beloved daughter and grandson have been seeking refuge from the horrors of war in our country for almost two years now. It is unbearably painful to live apart from my family, unable to embrace my children, help them, or wrap them in my care.
My children found shelter in the kind and welcoming England. For many months, I searched for opportunities to reunite with my children and support them. Fate smiled upon me when I met true friends—genuine and kind-hearted people. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Valeria from the USPUK charity for her help, support, and kindness. A huge thank you to my sponsor, Marlies, an extraordinary and sincere person with a big, kind heart. I am endlessly grateful to you.
Now, I am with my children—my daughter and grandson. I hope that together we can overcome the challenges of our new life.
I have been in England for three weeks. While this is not a long time, I have already felt how beautiful and friendly this country is. I am trying to adapt to my new life, helping my children, and hoping to find work. I chose to come to the UK because fate sometimes decides for us. England has become a second home for me.
My experience with my host family has been wonderful. I met an incredibly kind, compassionate, and sincere person—Marlies. This meeting feels like a divine gift to me.
The war in Ukraine continues, which means there are people suffering, families separated, and much sorrow and tears. Help is crucial! Supporting one another warms hearts and leads to true friendships.
As for my hopes for the future, I am a seamstress. I am trying to learn the language and find work so that I can repay the kindness of the people and the country that has sheltered my children and me during this incredibly challenging time."
