Finding safety and a new beginning: Mariia's journey from Cherkasy to the UK
In Mariia’s Own Words
"I’m from Cherkasy. I left Ukraine in May 2022, leaving my parents behind, which was extremely distressing. After a long journey, I arrived in the UK by plane from Poland.
I chose the UK because of the warmth and kindness I felt from the people here. I felt a sense of safety and belonging. Speaking English made it easier for me, and being in Europe meant I wasn’t too far from home and could visit my parents if needed.
I was fortunate to find an amazing host family. I’ve been living with them for 10 months now. My sponsors are educated, intelligent individuals with a wealth of life experience. They understood my anxieties and always treated me with kindness. I consider them my British family.
I settled in quickly. On the day after my arrival, my sponsor took me around the town, and I immediately began searching for a job. With a ready CV in hand, I found my first job in a family-owned café. As time passed, I transitioned to a fantastic role, and I have now been working as a Help Desk Coordinator at a fire safety company for a year. Outside of work, I’ve been learning English, practising yoga, and staying active. I’m incredibly grateful to be able to live a peaceful and secure life.
Despite the peace I’ve found here, the war continues in Ukraine. More families are being torn apart, and more homes are being destroyed. It’s crucial to find new host families for displaced Ukrainians, as many have lost everything and need a safe space to rebuild their lives. Sometimes, people just need a moment to feel secure and to regain their strength. The war may be prolonged, but we must continue to offer support.
As for my hopes, I truly believe the war will end soon, and that everyone who dreams of returning home will be able to do so and live happily and safely. I hope that the friendship between Ukraine and the UK will endure, with both countries continuing to support one another."
