Dana: From Odesa to a new chapter in the UK

Lidumyla with her hosts

In Dana’s own words

"My name is Dana, and I'm from Odesa. I left Ukraine at the end of June, which wasn’t an easy decision. It was very difficult for me to be away from Ukraine for more than two weeks since the start of the war. I travelled by train to Kraków and then took a flight to England.

In Ukraine, I worked as an IT recruiter for an international company. Coming to the UK was my choice because it’s a safe country, and the fact that English is the main language was a huge plus for me. Over the years, I’ve dedicated a lot of time to learning English, and I wasn’t ready to start learning a new language.

I feel incredibly lucky with my host family. They have become my friends, advisors, and a huge source of support. They showed me beautiful cities and places nearby, helping me adapt to this new environment. Currently, I’m looking for a job and hope to continue working in my field.

I believe it's still very important to find new host families for other displaced Ukrainians. I once asked my sponsors why they decided to take this step and welcome a stranger into their home. They told me, 'We just want someone to help us the same way if war ever comes to us.' By hosting, you give us a chance to start a new life, provide new opportunities, and, most importantly, a chance to live without fear and explosions. In many cases, it literally saves lives.

As for my future, I plan to find my first job in my field here and continue improving my English skills."
